Welcome, Olin College class of 2015!

Tiana Veldwisch

Hello Admitted Students,

Congratulations, and welcome to the Olin community!  My name is Alyssa Levitz, and I’m a senior here at Olin originally from Iowa City, Iowa.  I created my own major in environmental engineering, and after graduation I will be joining a major software company as a program manager.  But before then, it’s my job in this letter to get you psyched and welcomed to Olin!

We’re all excited about the newest addition to the Olin family, but I’m sure it’s nothing compared to your excitement.  The transition from high school to college is exhilarating and challenging at the same time.  Through this summer and your first few weeks at Olin, many people will be in touch with you giving you lots of information.

The Office of Student Life will get in touch with you to tell you your roommate assignment and give you the summer reading book.  Your R2s – Resident Resources – will email you to introduce themselves and their role as your go-to person for the year: when you think you need a tutor, when you’re having relationship troubles, when you just want an ear to listen, your R2s will help you and direct you to the help you need.  The Honor Board Chair will mail you a personal copy of the Honor Code, which you will sign the first week on campus.  You will be matched with a SIBB – an upper-class student assigned to guide you through Olin life – who can answer your questions about everything from what to bring for your dorm room to how to get to Boston.

Once you’re on campus, you’ll have a fun-filled week of orientation activities, after which the upperclassmen will arrive and classes will start.  In addition to academics, there are so many opportunities to get involved – in one of our hundreds of clubs (or perhaps one you decide to create), in student government and faculty committees, and in volunteer work.  There are the late-night conversations in West Hall lounges, low-pressure parties, dinners with the president of the college and SO MUCH MORE to look forward to.

Over the course of your four years at Olin, you will laugh, you’ll cry, and the friendships you make here will last a lifetime (none of alumni classes is old enough for us to know for sure, but given how I feel, it seems like a safe assumption).  You will be challenged, you will learn, you will grow.

Enjoy your last few months as a senior in high school, have a great summer, and get ready for what will be an AMAZING four years ahead of you!  If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with me – I’m always happy to help!

All the best,

Alyssa Levitz
